Indrani Chatterjee is the John L Nau III Distinguished Chair in the History and Principles of Democracy at University of Virginia. Her research interests include gender history and slavery in South Asian societies of the early modern and modern periods, Atlantic style abolitionism and its effects on South Asian legal, political and social institutions, and in understanding the place of hierarchical relationships in monastic governmental forms over a long durée.
