Games as Gifts of Culture

Presented by: Mikael Jakobsson

Abstract: I have spent a lot of time playing, writing, and talking about games being used as nationalist, militaristic and imperial enculturation. But I don’t want to talk to you about that today. I want to invite you to imagine a different future. Without any empirical evidence that good has the upper hand in geopolitics, environmental concerns, or social justice; where do we start? I suggest that it begins with a gift. A box containing a culturally specific narrative that brings recognition to insiders, understanding to outsiders, and joy to everyone involved. The MIT Game Lab acts as an amplifier for underrepresented voices who have important cultural narratives to share.
