Understanding the World through Games and Play

Presented by: Richard Eberhardt

Abstract: The notion of complex systems is central to many of today’s most pressing societal challenges, from tackling climate change to understanding the spread of diseases to untangling misinformation from information networks. These complex systems are hard to understand, since it is difficult to have lived experience at all scales of these systems. Multiplayer games can provide an opportunity to explore complex systems through active inquiry through interaction, coordination, and discussion with other players. Understanding becomes a playful process of teasing out actions, behaviors, and goals between players. New learning and understanding can then build upon this experience.
