Mikael Jakobsson, PhD conducts research at the intersection of game design and game culture at the MIT Game Lab. With a foundation in participatory design, interaction design, and critical theory, he approaches research questions through a combination of methods including design exploration and interaction criticism with the purpose of strengthening the voices of underprivileged stakeholders. His latest book Playing Oppression (with Mary Flanagan, 2023, MIT Press) explores the legacy of conquest and empire in colonialist board games and his latest game Promesa (with art and design collection Popsicleta, 2023) invites players to help solve the Puerto Rican debt crisis through political change. He teaches classes on undergraduate and graduate level in game studies and game design at MIT and Harvard.
